Alloy 20 Plate, also known as ASTM B463 UNS N08020 is an alloy of austenitic nickel-iron-chromium, which is niobium stabilized and to it have been added molybdenum and copper. Nickel ASTM B463 UNS N08020 shows superb resistance to phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid, plus it also exhibits very good resistance to intergranular corrosion. Because of this, sheets and plates of Nickel Alloy 20 are used in a great number of applications that are used for general purposes such as tanks, tubing, valves, heat exchangers, piping, pumps and other kinds of process equipment.

ASTM B463 UNS N08020 Sheet has the capability to resist chloride ion and pitting corrosion. Because of the copper content in it, it is protected against sulfuric acid. ASTM B463 is a Standard Specification for UNS N08020 Alloy Plate, Sheet, and Strip

Specification for ASTM B463 UNS N08020 covers the standard requirements for UNS N08026, UNS N08020, and UNS N08024 alloy plate (hot rolled or cold rolled), sheet, and strip. The ASTM B463 Alloy 20 must be furnished followed by heat treatment at certain annealing condition and temperature range: solution annealing for UNS N08026 alloy; stabilized annealing for UNS N08020 alloy; and annealing for UNS N08024 alloy. The material of the ASTM B463 Alloy 20 must conform to the chemical composition requirements for elements like carbon, copper, phosphorus, sulphur, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, columbium, tantalum, nitrogen, and iron, which have been mentioned as the specified. Mechanical property requirements such as Tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and Brinell or Rockwell hardness of the alloys must also be met as specified by the ASTM B463 Pdf.

ASTM B463 UNS N08020 is a type of an austenitic super alloy, with primary alloyants like nickel, iron and chromium with additions of metals like Copper and Molybdenum. These metals are why the alloy is able to which provide resistance against hostile environments, pitting, and crevice corrosion especially in environments that contain chemicals like chlorides and sulfuric, phosphoric, and nitric acids. For instance, Nickel added in the alloy aids in resisting chloride ion stress and corrosion resistance. Chromium on the other hand improves the alloys resistance in oxidizing environments such as nitric acids.  Due to being stabilized with Columbium, minimal carbide precipitation occurs during welding, therefore the alloy can be used in an as welded condition. Pre-heating treatment is not required. With the exception of oxyacetylene, conventional welding methods can be successfully be practised on the ASTM B463 UNS N08020. ASTM B463 N08020 appears to fall in both stainless as well as nickel categories since it contains characteristics or properties of both the categories. ASTM B463 Alloy 20 has good mechanical properties at both ambient as well as elevated temperatures, up to a temperature of approx. 930°F and it can be readily fabricated by standard industrial processes. The ASTM B463 UNS N08020 can’t be hardened by heat treatment. Stabilized-annealing is performed on the alloy between a temperature range of 1750 °F - 1850°F, followed by water quenching it. Stress relieving can be done on annealed material up to a temperature of 950°F.

While Processing the ASTM B463-10 via Hot Forming, the alloy is heated uniformly to a starting temperature of around 2100 °F - 2225°F. And the forging Finish is before the stock drops below a temperature of 1800°F. In order to stabilize the ASTM B463 UNS N08020 material after hot working operations, reheat at 1750-1850°F for a minimum of 1/2-hour per one inch of thickness and water quench. ASME Sb 463 has good cold formability. Forming operations like bending, drawing and pressing,  that occur in the production of fabricated items are readily performed on the alloy. For instance, Alloy 20 can normally be press brake bent over a radius twice that of the materials thickness. Typically, the alloy requires a final stabilizing annealing often after cold reductions of more than 15%.

Due to the high work-hardening rate of B463 UNS N08020 the following points needs to be catered to while machining the alloy - Only low surface-cutting speeds are probable as compared to low-alloy standard austenitic stainless steel, tools must be engaged at all times & heavy feeds are important in order to get the work-hardened skin. Although Alloy 20 was originally intended to be used for sulfuric acid related applications; however, today, it is frequently used in a wide variety of industries.
