ASTM B127 Sheet Plate is defined under ASTM B127.Monel Plate are produced through a rolling process. The rolling mill in this process, consists of speed control devices, gear boxes, rolls, motors, hydraulic systems, bearings that support the rolls, etc. The basic kind of rolling mill that is used is known as a two high rolling mill. Two opposing rolls are used in this kind of a rolling mill. When reversing mills are used, it is possible to change the direction in which the rolls are rotating. By doing this, from any direction, the work can thus be fed into the rolls. By using reversing mills, it becomes possible to increase the productivity. In the case of non-reversing mills, the roll rotation is in the same direction.

ASTM B127 UNS N04400 specifies strips, plates and sheets that are of rolled nickel-copper, also called Monel 400. This alloy is a binary alloy and it has the same proportions as that of copper and nickel. Monel 400 is considered to be a puritan alloy, as it is found naturally in the Sudbury (Ontario) mines, in the form of nickel ore.

ASTM B127 N04400 also consists of aluminum, columbium, molybdenum, titanium and iron. These plates and sheets of Monel ASTM B127 N04400 have good formability, they have high strength, they show superb resistance to corrosion, they are treatable by heat and they also show good weldability.Monel 400 Plate also displays very good resistance to corrosion by oxygen and acids.

ASTM B127 is a Standard Specification for Nickel-Copper Alloy (UNS N04400) Plate, Sheet, and Strip

ASTM B127-05 is a specification which covers rolled nickel-copper alloy i.e. - UNS N04400 produced in the form of Monel 400 plate, sheet, and strip. The material of the ASME Sb-127 alloy needs to conform to the required chemical composition. For instance, the ASTM B 127 Chemical Composition must include elements such as  manganese, carbon, nickel, copper, iron,  silicon, and sulphur. The material as mentioned in the ASTM B127 Pdf should conform to the mechanical properties as required by the specification including parameters such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and Rockwell hardness. The material also needs to conform to the required grain size as per the ASME Sb 127 Pdf. Other parameters like the dimensions of the plate, sheet, and strip such as thickness, width, or diameter, length, straightness, edges, squareness, and flatness must be determined.

MONEL R405 or ASTM B127 Monel is a Nickel-Copper based alloy with excellent resistance to corrosion in various mediums. One of the main properties of the alloy is its good resistance to sea water, rapidly flowing brackish water and steam, even at elevated temperatures as well as its resistance to salt and caustic solutions.

Since the ASTM B127 UNS N04400 has been characterized by good general corrosion resistance and moderate to high strength, the alloy has been recommended for use in various applications. Alloy R405 is particularly resistant to hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid as well as good resistance to sulfuric acid in a de-aerated condition. Acids in an aerated conditions will result in an increase in the rate of corrosion. Although the alloy can be used in applications involving hydrochloric acid, but in the presence of oxidizing salt, the alloy will greatly be susceptible to an accelerated corrosive attack.

MONEL R405 alloy tends to be slightly magnetic at room temperature. Typical applications of the ASTM B127 Qq-N-281 are widely used in the chemical, oil as well as marine industries due to its resistance to Corrosion in an extensive range of marine and chemical environments for e.g. from pure water to nonoxidizing mineral acids, salts & alkalis.

Under reducing conditions, the ASTM B127 N04400 is more resistant to nickel and tends to be more resistant as compared to copper under oxidizing conditions & the alloy however, demonstrates better resistance when exposed to reducing media than oxidizing. The ASME Sb 127 retains its good mechanical properties at a wide range of temperature settings i.e. - from subzero temperatures right up to about 480C.

Although the ASTM B127 UNS N04400 tends to be resistance to neutral, alkaline and acid salts, but the alloy has poor resistance when it has been exposed to oxidizing acid salts such as ferric chloride. ASTM B127 Monel 400 also has excellent resistance to chloride ion related stress corrosion cracking. Due to addition of sulphur in the alloy for free machining, welding is not possible for MONEL R405.

Applications of the ASTM B127 UNS N04400 include their use in Sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid alkylation plants, Transfer piping from oil refinery crude columns, Feed water and steam generator tubing, Brine heaters, sea water scrubbers in tanker inert gas systems, Pickling bat heating coils, Heat exchangers in a variety of industries, Cladding for the upper areas of oil refinery crude columns. Radiation Plants also utilize the ASTM B127 Monel 400  for the refining of uranium and isotope separation in the manufacture of nuclear fuel.
